The ubiquity of keyboards in our digital lives is undeniable; however, the layout we rely on has deep historical roots that may not suit modern usage. The QWERTY keyboard, created in 1863 by Christopher Sholes to alleviate typewriter jams, was revolutionary for its time, but its relevance has waned in the context of contemporary mobile devices.

With the advent of smartphones in 2007, which favored touch-based interaction, the traditional QWERTY layout posed new challenges. The disparity between typing on a physical keyboard and a touchscreen manifests in several ways:

• Different typing methods: physical keyboards typically utilize all ten fingers, while touchscreens often only use one.
• Varied gestures: typing techniques differ significantly between swipe and non-swipe interfaces.

This disconnect has led to usability challenges, as touchscreen devices are still largely tailored to accommodate traditional keyboards:

• Space limitations: reduced key sizes and unnecessary gaps between keys hinder performance.
• Typing speed constraints: the QWERTY layout is not optimized for swiping, resulting in slower input as users navigate borders between keys.
• Ergonomic discomfort: many users are compelled to adopt awkward postures, often requiring two hands or switching to landscape mode for effective typing.

To address these issues, an innovative approach was adopted. By structuring the keyboard in a hexagonal layout, a design inspired by natural efficiency, key sizes can be increased by up to 50% within the same device space. This adjustment enhances typing speed by allowing more fluid swipe connections between letters while eliminating gaps. Furthermore, the ergonomic design centers around one-handed use, fostering comfort during input.
